Aims of the project
Munitions resting on the seabed are a risk for maritime traffic and impede with the construction of offshore installations (e.g. wind turbines). Furthermore, the (chemical) contents of these munitions pose a threat to people on the beaches and are a long-term environmental hazard for the ecosystem. These problems cannot be ignored, even more since the progressive corrosion of the metal housings leads to an enhanced release of toxic substances into the surrounding environment.
The aim of the UDEMM project is to monitor the disarming process of these ordnances and in addition, to investigate the environment of the study area before and during the work within the partner project ROBEMM (BMWi). Therefore, the UDEMM project is subdivided into four different, yet strongly connected “work packages” (WP), each concentrating on a specific aspect of the project.
